Chinese characters on the obverse:
Right - Bi - to eradicate;
Left - Xie (Hsieh) - wicked, bad, base; devildom.
Bi Xie means:
- To eradicate evil, to protect from evil's spirit.
- Magic deer, whose styled image served as charm and ornament during Han dynasty.
Symbols of the Nothern Heaven on the reverse - a Turtle, a Sward, a Snake
and the seven stars of Ursa Major constellation (Chinese Pei Tou
[Bei Dou] - stars of Nothern Ladle).
As we can see from description of another charms with Ursa major -
Wu Hsing Ta Pu and
Chia Ch'in T'ung Pao - symbols
on the reverse serve for protection against devil forces.
