The shown paper is a check issued by the Compradore, Electricity Department of Shanghai Municipal Council (within the territory of Foreign Concession) as a payment of 167.75 taels of silver to KATOH CO., dated August 9, 1929, and paid by the SUMITOMO BANK, LIMITED, in Shanghai.
The payment was made by and between two foreign parties, stationed in Shanghai in 1929. Selected payment method - silver - indicates that sycee currency was still widely circulated in China at that time.
